- Introduction
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- MM_MegaStat is an Area Statistics script for MailManager. That is, it
- generates messages like these:

- -+- MM 1.22x/n #1511 & MM_MegaStat v0.14
- + Origin: Created by MM_MegaStat v0.14 (C)1997-8 Neil Williams (2:442/107.0)
-
-
- This program is not in any way based on the code to MegaStat for Spot by
- Paul Nuzzo. (I haven't even seen the code..) It is totally written by Neil
- Williams, with the sole exception of the Int routine and the insertion
- sort, which were both inspired by EchoStat.Spot.
-
- MM_MegaStat was written with the help Robert Hofmann's
- MM_RexxDevelopperKit, which made writting this much easier! Thanks Robert!
- :)
-
- This program is now shareware - if you like it you should send £5 (Five
- pounds Sterling) to the address below. You do not need to do this, as the
- program is fully usable and you won't get anything in return for your money
- (except maybe a "thank you" netmail). I would however like people who do
- use this program to at least send me a netmail or e-mail and tell me, so I
- can see that people are actually using my programs.

- Bugs
- ~~~~
- I am still working on this program, and there are plenty of things I have
- in mind at the moment, but I would like users to give me feed back on this,
- please!
-
-
-
- ToDo
- ~~~~
- Lots more stats planned!
-
- Speed enhancements.
-
- The ability to store a database of the messages as they are imported, and
- generate the stats from that. (i.e., so there is no need to keep a months
- worth of messages or more on your hard disk)
-
-
-
- History
- ~~~~~~~
- 0.14 - Public Release (28/10/98)
- -------------------------------------
- Now reports:
- Number of messages with no tear line.
- Total percentage of quoted text over all messages parsed.
-
- New Misc Stats box. Add "#MISCSTATS Yes" to the config file, and there is
- a matching command line option NoMiscStats which can be used to temporarily
- disable it. The new statistics which are reported in it are:
- Largest PATH:
- Largest SEEN-BY:
- Various 'number of lines' stats.
-
- Fixed a bug with the Quoter stats.
-
- Looks up node address in message poster stats, so that we can highlight
- anyone who isn't listed.
-
- New config item: #POSTERPOINTS. Works with the new node address look-up
- in the poster stats. If set to yes, we don't look up the boss node but
- instead try to look for the address verbatim - even if it's a point.
-
- Item number (leftmost columns) now work okay with > 2 character numbers
- (like I said previously, LandNet is one hell of a place).
-
- New command line option - TOTAL (keyword option, i.e. you must use TOTAL=50
- on in the arguments). This overrides the #TOTAL option in the configuration
- file.
-
- 0.13 - Public Release (6/6/98)
- -------------------------------------
- The program didn't handle 4 figure values correctly, fixed. (Thousands of
- message a week? Freq LANDNET from 2:442/108! It's worth your time!)
- Document bug: I called an insertion sort a bubble sort!
- The tear stats can now be set to reflect the actual software in use. The
- new configuration option to use is #USETEARSW (Yes/No), and must be use in
- conjunction with #TEARSTATS. Another unique MM_MegaStat feature? :-)
-
- 0.12 - Public release (3/9/97)
- -------------------------------------
- MAJOR new feature added : multiple areas support. Create statistics for a
- range of areas. (For details, check the documentation on the command line
- option AREA - it has changed function slightly).
-
- 0.11 - Public release (1/9/97)
- -------------------------------------
- Minor cosmetic changes, and some minor speed enhancements. Documentation
- has been cleaned up a little too. New command line option : EXPORT
-
- 0.10 - Public release (29/7/97)
- -------------------------------------
- The new kludges statistics in the header have been refined, and you can now
- disable them in the configuration file or by the command line.
- (#SMALLHEADER in config, SMALLHEADER for CLI). Also fixed a documentation
- bug - the date in the history section for the 0.9 release was wrong.
-
- 0.9 - Public release (27/7/97)
- -------------------------------------
- Many small alterations and the command line options were enhanced quite a
- bit.
-
- 0.8 - Private release (23/7/97)
- -------------------------------------
- Changed "EchoMail Origins" to "EchoMail Originators" (suggested by Tomasz
- Nidecki)
- The time graph is much clearer to read, as it now uses a more dynamic
- display method (i.e., it can display on ranges of upto 100% or 50% now).
- A new command line option is available - SINCELAST (suggested by Dave
- Naylor)
-
- 0.7ß2 - Public release (15/3/97)
- -------------------------------------
- The time graph has been made a little neater, and although I've got a few
- optimisations to do for speed it seems okay. I also decided to release this
- on the unsuspecting public =] A compressed version is also supplied from
- now on (using CompressRexx 2.1 by Robert Hofmann.)
-
- 0.7ß - Private release (8/3/97)
- -------------------------------------
- Implemented working graphs at last. They took me a whole day to do,
- ya'know! :) The keywork in the configuration is #TIMESTATS
-
- 0.6 - First public release (1/3/97)
- -------------------------------------
- Tear line stats added, and each line in the statistics is numbered.
-
- 0.1ß -> 0.5 - Development (27/2/97)
- -------------------------------------
- I have no idea what I did and when I did it. But everything except that
- above was done in this time frame - 2 or 3 weeks worth perhaps.
-
-
-
- ---------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
-
- Installation
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Depack the archive to "MM:" (i.e. the directory of MM), or you could
- dearchive it to a temporary directory and copy the files across manually..
-
- That's it! It just needs configuring now.
-
-
-
- Configuration
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This is done by the usual text file in MM:Config, named MM_MegaStat.CFG
-
-
-
- 1 - #TOTAL <number> e.g. #TOTAL 20
-
- The maximum number of items in each statistic. More takes longer to
- process.
-
- The example above used a #TOTAL value of 20, and this is usually a
- good number to stick to. This item has no default, so it MUST be
- present.
-
-
-
- 2 - #BLACKLIST <number 1-100> e.g. #BLACKLIST 57
-
- This is the percentage that a user needs to quote in order to become
- `blacklisted.' A value of between 50 and 60% is usually okay.
-
-
- 3 - #DECINT <DECIMAL or INTEGER> e.g #DECINT DECIMAL
-
- Set to DECIMAL for "23.4%" (= floating point) style percentages or
- INTEGER for "23%"
-
-
- 4 - #FROM <text> e.g. #FROM Neil Williams
- (optional)
-
- The name that posted messages are from (No quotes.) Defaults to the
- name you have set as the default sysop in MM_Prefs.
-
-
-
- 5 - #TO <text> e.g. #TO All
- (optional)
-
- The name that posted messages are to, normally "All" and this is also
- the default. Again no quotes are needed for more than one word.
-
-
-
- 6 - #SUBJECT <text> e.g. #SUBJECT Echo Stats
- (optional)
-
- The subject used in posted message. %AREA will be replaced by the
- name of the area you are producing statistics for, and %DATE will be
- replaced by the date (in the form "24 Feb 1997")
-
- Defaults to "Area Statistics : %DATE for %AREA"
-
-
- 7 - #SMALLHEADER (YES or NO)
-
- If you have #USEHEADER (below) enabled, this will display some
- statistics on the kludge lines in use.
-
-
- 8 - #USEHEADER (YES or NO)
-
- Add a header to the statistics. For example:
-
- .--------------------------------------------.
- | Statistics for area : WORKBENCH |
- | Date created : 07 Mar 1997 11:32:35 |
- | Number of messages : 20 |
- | of which: 20 had MSGID: kludges, |
- | 10 had CHRS: kludges, |
- | 12 had PID: kludges, |
- | 0 had TID: kludges, |
- `--------------------------------------------'
-
-
- 9 - #POSTERSTATS (YES or NO)
-
- Create statistics on who has posted the most messages. For example:
-
- .-------------------------------.
- | Message Writers : Total 57 |
- .-------+-------------------------------+-----------------------------.
- | No. Name Address Msgs Posted Quoted |
- +---------------------------------------------------------------------+

-
-
-
- 13 - #TEARSTATS (YES or NO)
-
- Create statistics on what is the most popular software packages in
- use. This isn't usually accurate, because of product serial numbers,
- but it's usually good enough.
-
- For example:
-
- .--------------------------------.
- | Message Tear Lines : Total 55 |
- .-------+--------------------------------+----------------------------.
- | No. Tear Line Number Used |
- +---------------------------------------------------------------------+
- | 1. --- Spot 1.3a Unregistered ....................... 69 . (13.8%) |

- `---------------------------------------------------------------------'
-
-
- 14 - #USETEARSW (YES or NO)
-
- This is used together with #TEARSTATS. When this is switched on,
- MM_MegaStat examines the tear lines of the messages and tries to work
- out what software was used. With this new data, it can build a "Most
- popular software" table to replace the "Message tear lines" you see
- above. This removes the inaccuracy cause by both product serial
- number and program version numbers.
-
-
-
- 15 - #NODESTATS (YES or NO)
-
- Create statistics on which BBS or node is the most popular / has the
- most active users. For example:
-
- .-------------------------------.
- | Echomail Origins : Total 28 |
- .-------+-------------------------------+-----------------------------.
- | No. BBS / Node Address Location Msgs Posted |

-
-
-
- 16 - #TIMESTATS (YES or NO)
-
- Create a statistics graph which shows the times people posted their
- messages. For example:
-
- .--------------------------------.
- | Most Popular Messaging Times |
- .-------+-------+------------------------+----------------------------.
- | Time Range | 1%.........25%...........50%.........75%.......100% |

- | 22:00 - 23:59 | ********** |
- `---------------+-----------------------------------------------------'
-
-
-
- 16 - #MISCSTATS (YES or NO)
-
- Create some stats which don't really belong anywhere else.
-
- .--------------------------.
- | Miscellaneous Statistics |
- .-------+--------------------------+----------------------------------.
- | Largest PATH: .............................................: 7 |
- | Largest SEEN-BY: ..........................................: 40 |

- | Total tear lines over the 35 character standard ...........: 0 |
- | Total origin lines over the 79 character standard .........: 0 |

-
-
-
- I personally recommend that all the statistics options are switched on.

- Usage
- ~~~~~
-
- [RX] MM_MegaStat[.rexx] AREA/A START POSTMSG/S SINCELAST/S EXPORT/S
- SMALLHEADER/S NOUSEHEADER/S NOPOSTERSTATS/S
- NORECEIVERSTATS/S NOSUBJECTSTATS/S
- NOQUOTERSTATS/S NONODESTATS/S NOTEARSTATS/S
- NOTIMESTATS/S NOMISCSTATS/S
-
-
- AREA is required (hence the /A). It's the TAG name of the echo area you
- want to produce statistics for, or if you instead specify a valid file name
- here MM_MegaStat will open this file and read each line, create statistics
- for each area mentioned. The format of the file is simple, simply place
- the tag name of each area on a new line - no blank spaces, and no comments.
- Note: POSTMSG will not work when there is more than one area involved.
-
-
- START is not required, but recommended. It specifies the number of
- messages to look at to create the statistics. If you specify 20 for
- example, MM_MegaStat will look at the 20 *newest* messages (i.e. the last
- 20 in the area.)
-
- If you specify "ALL", or don't include a value, then all the messages in
- the area will be taken for the statistics.
-
-
- POSTMSG is a switch (hence the /S). If POSTMSG is present the statistics
- will be posted into the area. If it's not present, the stats will simply
- be left in the file "T:MM_MegaStat.tmp"
-
-
- SINCELAST is a switch. This is a very powerful feature! It scans the area
- for a message which looks like it is statistics posting from this program,
- and uses this as a starting point.
-
- The message it looks for is:
- 1. From the name you have configured in MM_MegaStat.CFG
- 2. The first 8 characters of the subject match that configured (if you
- are using SinceLast is is therefore recommened that you put a date
- (%DATE in the config) AFTER the 8 characters limit)
- 3. Is addressed to the same as the config (Usually 'All')
-
- For best performance of this feature, you may want to post stats with a
- unique name - like "Echo Stats Robot" or something.
-
-
- EXPORT is a switch. If it is included, and POSTMSG is used, then the area
- the message has been posted in is exported.
-
-
- SMALLHEADER is the same as the configuration option #SMALLHEADER. It's
- function is to supress the information on kludges in the header.
-
-
- NOUSEHEADER and other NO#? options can be used to disable the output of
- the statistics that they match in the configuration file.
-
-
- Example Usage
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
- MM_MegaStat Workbench 200 PostMsg
-
- Take statistics from the WORKBENCH area, using the last 200 messages, and
- post the statistics straight into the echo.
-
-
- MM_MegaStat CLUB_AMIGA PostMsg
-
- Take statistics from the CLUB_AMIGA area, using all the messages in the
- area, and post the statistics straight into the echo.
-
-
- MM_MegaStat W_ANYTHING 2000
-
- Take statistics from the W_ANYTHING area, using the last 2000 messages. The
- statistics will be left in a file T:MM_MegaStat.tmp and not posted in the
- echo.
